Atheists: Can we come out of the closet?
Sat Mar 08, 2008 at 03:31:13 PM PDT
An article in today’s Los Angeles Times by John Allan Paulos discusses two polls about American’s attitudes towards atheists. The first was a 2006 University of Minnesota poll that indicated that atheists are "seen as a threat to the American way of life by a large portion of the American public" and that atheists are at the bottom of the list of candidates (after Catholics, Jews and Gays) that they are willing to support. This has been diaried several times before. The second poll is a recent Pew forum poll that quantifies American’s religious identity. This second poll helps to explain the first and, I believe, is a call to action for atheists.
Underdog vs. Superpolitician

The Obama campaign has been the most exciting and rewarding experience of my lifetime. If it were a movie script, it would be rejected because it was too corny.
It's like a religious conversion

As an atheist Jew, the born again phenomena seemed a bizarre rite, something completely alien to my kind. However, two recent events have made me realize that I may not be immune to it.
My response to Carville and the DSCC
Fri Jan 11, 2008 at 06:27:21 AM PDT
Yesterday I received a personal letter from James Carville asking me to donate to the DSCC. I scribbled a note about my personal distaste for Carville on the donation card and returned it using the pre-stamped envelope. My guilt about putting the DSCC out $0.35 was outweighed by the thought that if enough of us respond this way, at least they will remove Carville from their letterhead.
GW as Bertie Wooster

The November 27 issue of the New Yorker has a hilarious P.G. Wodehouse parody by Christopher Buckley. Although you probably have to be a Wodehouse fan to really appreciate it, this humor is, I hope, universal. I laugh out loud (really) every time I think about it. This is destined to become a classic of political humor. I have included a few excerpts below, but do not miss the whole (1 page) freely available article.
2004 Kerry loss Saved us
Mon Nov 13, 2006 at 07:33:11 AM PDT
Two years ago, when gloom had settled on everyone around me, I looked for the silver lining. I told anyone who would listen that Kerry's loss was actually a good thing. Tuesday's victory validated my opinion. (Too bad I was not a Kos addict then, so I cannot document my 2004 prediction).
Garrison Keillor: Roll call of Senate damned
Thu Oct 05, 2006 at 11:47:11 AM PDT
Amid all the endless discussion (ranting?) about the Senate terror bill, one would not expect anything more could be written that would have any impact. However, I am haunted by Garrison Keillor's recent editorial [
